How to Apply to AISH

What is AISH?

AISH, otherwise known as Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, is a program in Alberta that provides financial and health-related assistance to eligible adults with a permanent disability that substantially limits their ability to earn a living. AISH benefits may include a living allowance, personal benefits, health benefits, and child benefits. This guide will help you navigate through the steps of applying for AISH, getting you closer to receiving the support you need.

What Disabilities Qualify for AISH?

Medical eligibility requires a severe handicap, causing a substantial limitation in earning a livelihood. To be classified as severely handicapped, three conditions must be met:

  1. Impairment in mental and/or physical functioning.
  2. Significant limitation in the ability to earn a living.
  3. Probable permanence of the impairment with no available therapy for improvement.

How to Know if You Qualify

To qualify, the individual must be 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident residing in Alberta, and not receiving certain pensions under the Old Age Security Act. Financial eligibility depends on your income and assets, and you’re expected to access all the income and assets you’re entitled to. Understanding this criteria is key for a smooth application process.

How Long Does AISH Approval Take?

The approval timeline for AISH is highly dependant on how quickly you can submit all the necessary documents for your application. The process can up to 6 months or even longer before you receive a decision on your eligibility. It’s crucial to ensure all your documents are complete and accurate to speed up the assessment process.

Step 1: Start Your Application

Begin your AISH application by choosing a convenient method: apply online or complete the AISH Applicant form if online application is not feasible. For online assistance, contact Alberta Supports Contact Centre at 1-877-644-9992.

Step 2: Medical Report

Your doctor’s input is crucial. Ensure your doctor completes the AISH Medical Report form to later submit with other necessary documents.

*Note: Your doctor may charge you for this service. If you are on Income Support, the cost to fill in these reports may be covered – contact your Income Support worker. If you are not on Income Support, but need financial help – find out how to apply for other benefits, while waiting for AISH.

Step 3: Document Submission

Compile all necessary documents for your application. Common documents required for the application may include:

  • The Applicant’s personal and family information
  • AISH Medical report from the applicant’s doctor
  • Proof of identity, citizenship, or immigration status
  • Current residence and mailing address
  • Trustee or Power of Attorney documentation – if applicable
  • Proof of existing income
  • Recent bank account and investment statements
  • Documentation of current assets

Save or print copies for your records. You can submit your application and supporting documents via:

  • Online through your AISH account
  • Fax: 1-877-969-3006 (toll free, Alberta)
  • Mail: AISH, PO Box 17000 Station Main, Edmonton, Alberta T5J 4B3

After You Apply

An AISH staff member may request additional information. If approved, you can expect a confirmation phone call and mailed letter, followed by benefits activation. If you have not approved, you will receive a detailed letter explaining the decision and the appeal process.

If you have any questions on the status of your AISH application, call 587-759-6810 (Edmonton), or 1-877-759-6810 (Alberta).
